How to avoid a roach payback in a damp kitchen

When monsoon humidity and dampness in your kitchen concur with infestation factors, cockroaches have an opportunity to spring back into resurgence, no different than the returning wet season crops and thunderstorms. The nocturnal scavengers are ideally suited to warm, damp conditions. Your kitchen is an infestation stronghold. But with targeted strategies and a little vigilance, you can stop their comeback before it starts.

Why a Damp Kitchen Brings Roaches Back

1. Water Source everywhere :

There is little doubt that a leaky pipe and condensation on walls, or any standing water (like a sink, or trays under the sink for example) can provide roaches the hydration they need to survive, and breed.

2. Party leftovers: food residue and grease

Damp sponges, spilled sauces, unfilled crumbs are inviting to hungry roaches. Crumbs come from somewhere, and leftover food comes from every part of your kitchen. Over time when cleaning, grease builds up behind appliances and under cabinets – that is buffet for cockroaches.

3. Ample Surreal vegetation cover/hiding spots:

“Kitchen clutter, doesn’t have to mean roaches.” Cluttered cupboards and stacked containers and damp cardboard boxes provide the dark damp areas where not only a cockroach can breed, but breed undisturbed.

Prevention Plan

1. Elimination :

Repair Leaks Right Away: Look under the sinks, behind dishwashers, and around refrigerators for drips. Even the smallest leak can provide hundreds of roaches with a sustainable water source.

Increased ventilation:  Operating exhaust fans while and after cooking helps to quickly ventilate surface moisture. After you have finished cleaning, briefly leave the cabinet doors open to help air out any residual moisture that may be present.

Use Desiccants: Place silica-gel or moisture absorbing crystals or packets in cupboards and under the sink to help prevent build-up of humidity.

2.  Keep Surfaces Spotless

•Replace Sponges & Cloths Weekly:  Damp cleaning cloths and sponges can be a source of bacteria, food scraps, and roach eggs. To avoid this, change out cleaning cloths and sponges every 7 days.

•Degrease behind appliances:  At least once a month, remove all movable appliances from the walls, think stove, refrigerator, or moveable cabinets that can hold food debris and grease. Wipe down to remove all hidden grease and food debris.

•Store Foods Properly:  Most staples should be stored in sealed glass or hard-plastic containers. Besides any food in refrigerator or for immediate consumption, do not leave pet food or fruits on counters for long periods or overnight.

3. Seal Entry Points

• Caulk Cracks & Gaps: Food-grade silicone should be used to seal any penetrations through the wall, baseboards, and piping. Roaches can fit through openings as thin as the width of their antenna.

• Install Door Sweeps & Mesh Screens: Install sweeps at doors leading outside, and install fine mesh screens over air vents, or exhaust ports protecting against crawling intruders.

4. Monitor & Treat Preventively

• Use Glue Traps: Place tamper-resistant glue boards behind the fridge, under sinks, and in dark corners of the kitchen to intercept the first wanderers if they get in.

• Introduce Bait Stations: Place bait boxes alongside baseboards. These bait box stations would cause roaches to consume slow-acting gels and carry the bait back to their nest.

• Schedule Professional Inspections: Quarterly inspections for roaches, from MA Pest Control LLP can detect hidden hot-spots and apply pinpoint treatments before populations grow/choke.
