Kolkata’s rainy days are a welcome change from the heat of summer, but with high humidity and lots of waterlogged ground, it’s a perfect time for subterranean termites to invade your home’s foundations. Here’s why moisture spells trouble for termites and a few steps you can take to waterproof your house against these silent destroyers.
1. Monsoon Moisture and Termite Activity
Subterranean termites live underground in colonies that could number in the hundreds of thousands. They digest cellulose that is found in wood and, during the rain, two factors are at work when swarmer’s and workers are active:
1.1.Softened Soil Makes Tunnelling Easier
With saturated earth the soil has more openness and, well, more dust. This allows the termites to build new mud tubes and extend their foraging area toward your foundation.
1.2.Wood Meets Water
Extra sport groundwater will increase the moisture content of wood structures (floor joists, door frames, skirting boards). More moisture content is better food source for termites.
Once you reach over 20% moisture content, you begin to lose structural integrity of wood, and, the scent of damp timber looks awfully good to swarmer’s from nearby colonies.
2. Early Detection Signs
Finding termites sooner rather than later can save you thousands of dollars in repairs. After heavy rain, check for:
2.1. Mud Tubes
Mud tubes are pencil-width brown tunnels of mud, soil, and a combination of termite saliva made by subterranean termites. You may find mud tubes on basement walls, crawlspace wood beams, or concrete slabs.
2.2. Hollow Wood
Hitting the timber with your knuckles on exposed timber may reveal a hollow “knock,” indicating the presence of internal tunnelling by termites.
2.3. Swarmer’s or shed wings
Swarmer’s are little flying insect that resemble ants with wings, and you will find them emerging near windows, light fixtures, and anything else with light sources or shed wings on sills.
2.4. Sagging floors or doors
Floors can sag and needs repair if moisture persists for too long. You may have sticking doors if termites have damaged a door frame.
These are simply early detection signs, if you see or hear any of these indicators, a competent inspection by a professional will be needed for confirmation.
3. Practical Waterproofing Techniques
A waterproofing program will not only be effective in protecting your structure against termites, but also protecting your home against water-related issues including mould and rot.
3.1. Building Sealants
Use either a cementitious waterproofing coating, or elastomeric waterproof coating, to your foundation on the exterior (6″ or more above ground level). This will limit water infiltration and cause termites to tunnel deeper and be more readily detected.
3.2. Perimeter Drains
Install French drains or drain tiles around the perimeter of the entire concrete foundation. Drain tiles consist of a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel in a trench. A drain tile area allows rain water to flow away and prevents rain from pooling against your wall area.
3.3. Gutter and Downspout Maintenance
In monsoon months to limit splashback, and ease the amount of moisture saturation into the soil around your home, clean your gutters monthly and make sure to extend your downspouts at least 3–4 feet from the foundation.
3.4. Grade Slope
The ground around your home should slope away from the structure (roughly 1:8 grade). A reasonable slope will encourage runoff and will discourage any pooling or accumulation of water at the base of your walls.
3.5. Vapor Barriers in Crawlspaces
Lay down heavy-duty polyethylene sheeting over bare earth in crawlspaces, sealing the seams. This will minimize moisture from the ground to rise into the structure and deprive termites of a preferred warm, humid environment.
4. Professional Termite Protection
While there are several methods for individuals to mitigate moisture infiltration and DIY applications for waterproofing, comprehensive termite protection should incorporate:
•Soils Treatments using termiticides before and after waterproofing
•Baiting Stations located in parallel around the perimeter of the home for monitoring
•Regular Inspections, especially during peak swarm times (July-August)
Protect Your Home
Don’t let Kolkata’s monsoon rain be the downflow you thought it would ever be where you could lose your home to hidden colonies of termites.
